How to become “effective”? Tips for young doctors and students

1. Take the first step before anyone else.

You need to start with the first courses of the Faculty of Dentistry. Mastering the basics is best done by those who already have an assistant experience. Working as an assistant, the future doctor will understand in advance the algorithms of the dentist, will immerse himself in his specialty, will be able to understand the subtleties of the specialty. Undoubtedly, this can interfere with study, but the ability to properly distribute your time and attention between study and work are the first steps on the road to efficiency.2. Find a mentor. It’s easier to walk along a road than to make your own path.

It would be great if the novice doctor had an informal mentor who could help him with advice. Show the young doctor methods, train him in the preparation of treatment plans. I know many doctors who, with their pure enthusiasm, help young colleagues, especially if young doctors work as assistants in their own clinics. Sometimes, mentors have enough elementary respect and gratitude expressed by the student to feel an incentive to learn. Remember this. This seems to be a matter of course, but …

3. And experience is the son of difficult mistakes … It is best to make mistakes on phantoms than in the oral cavity.

It is certain that work on phantoms contributes to the formation of a doctor. Endodontics training on extracted teeth, preparation of teeth on models, hygienist skills worked out by friends and acquaintances will significantly shorten the period of adaptation to clinical activity.

4. Solve the problem, having the answer at the end of the textbook.

It is very useful when, under the guidance of a knowledgeable specialist, a student or a young doctor analyzes the CT scan, models and photos and draws up treatment plans. Even better, when a young doctor writes treatment plans for already pre-analyzed patients.

5. Do not travel without knowing where you are going.

In mastering a specialty, the ability to set goals is important. Training should be clearly planned. A specific task is posed. For example, learn how to plan treatment in DSD – digital smile design. The training is held until the mentor expresses satisfaction. It is clear that this will have to be studied and improved all my life, but now the question is about the basics. Make a list of the technologies that you need to master in order to be at an adequate, modern level of dentistry.

6. Do not cook in your own juice ….

Constant work with information is something that a modern doctor cannot do without. We live in an ever-changing information environment. Modern social networks provide an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in this world. Almost all manufacturers have websites with newsletter subscriptions. This allows you to keep abreast of all the new products, a huge number of very high-quality dentists constantly publish their wonderful work in social networks. Studying all this and develops understanding, and makes it possible to touch the highest level of dentistry. It is extremely useful for a young doctor to participate in such virtual communities.

7. The team of our youth ….

Teamwork is what distinguishes all high-level clinics. The ability and desire to work in a team is the key to effective work. It makes sense to create such mini-groups at the institute. To begin with, you can distribute certain topics among yourself, prepare public reports on them and share information. This will teach how to work with information and communication with colleagues, create a healthy spirit of competition.

8. It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness all my life.

One of the important components of the work of the dentist is the ability to communicate with patients. Skill is always interconnected with experience. It would be extremely useful for a young doctor or student to have his own website, a page in social networks for patients, or a blog where he would speak from an educational position. This will teach you to formulate your thoughts correctly; answers to patient questions verified by an experienced doctor will create communication skills with patients, and I have no doubt that this will create the basis for creating a future patient database.

9. We are those who surround us

Sooner or later, any doctor will face the task of personnel management. The staff will often change and it makes sense to have skills in training staff. Written and constantly updated job descriptions will allow, firstly, not to forget to transfer the necessary information to the new employee, and secondly, significantly reduce the time for their training.

10. Measure 7 times, then measure three more times, then postpone the task for a couple of days, and then cut it off.

The rational distribution of funds, the constant costs of new equipment and materials should not take the doctor by surprise. Many successful clinics save money in advance for the development fund. This is called financial planning and allows you to grow consistently. The purchase of new equipment should be preceded by a thoughtful analysis of its need, based on the opinion of reputable colleagues.
